Overview
HF Sinclair in Artesia, NM is seeking an Instrument Craftsman. This position focuses on maintaining and commissioning process control instrumentation and associated valves, troubleshooting, installing, repairing, and adjusting equipment to ensure the refinery process operates safely and reliably.
Responsibilities- Install, repair, maintain, and calibrate instruments that measure process variables such as pressure, flow, temperature, motion, force, and chemical composition using hand tools, precision instruments, hydrocarbon detectors, and H2S monitors.
- Maintain non‑conventional instrumentation, including product blending systems, tank farm gauging and management systems, distributed control systems, and PLCs.
- Reassemble instrument assemblies, test, and calibrate them for conformance with specifications using test instruments such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and manometers, and document calibrations.
- Inspect instruments periodically and adjust minor calibrations to keep them within specified limits.
- Read schematics, P&IDs, and loop sheets; understand digital control systems, valves, transmitters, and transducers.
- Perform safety procedures, report unsafe conditions to the Shift Foreman, and participate in monthly safety walk‑through audits.
- Maintain and troubleshoot pneumatic instruments and controllers.
- Work extended hours outside the routine schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- Travel to the Lovington site for various work assignments.
Special assignments or tasks assigned by the supervisor, as determined from time to time in their sole discretion.
QualificationsMinimum of 3 years instrumentation/electronics experience or equivalent background in an industrial setting.
Preferred: refinery or chemical plant experience; experience maintaining distributed control systems, analyzers, and PLCs; familiarity with pH equipment, hydrocarbon and H2S detectors, and furnace oxygen analyzers.
EducationHigh School diploma or equivalent required.
Preferred:
Associate’s Degree in Process Control/Electronics or similar.
- Problem‑solving and multitasking with strong analytical skills.
- Read and interpret blueprints, control loop sheets, and electrical schematics; draft simple work sketches.
- Diagnose and repair intermittent failures in process control equipment; perform basic math for setting flows, levels, temperatures, and pressures.
- Proficient in precision test and calibration equipment.
- Strong written and verbal communication; basic reading and writing.
Field‑based; flexible to changing schedule; willing to work overtime and 12‑hour shifts during outages.

Must be flexible to changing schedule; able to work overtime and 12‑hour shifts. Able to work in adverse weather and lift up to 50 lb; lift, carry, climb, walk, stand, stoop, kneel, push reach, climb stairs and ladders, balance, and operate breathing apparatus when required.
