About this opportunityThe Nunavut Department of Education, Kivalliq School Operations, is seeking a Learning Coach who is committed to supporting strong learning environments for Nunavut’s students.
As a Learning Coach in Nunavut, you will:
- Support instructional practice and student learning through relationships grounded in community
- Act as a trusted guide, facilitator, and co‑learner who models and supports the use of effective, evidence‑based instructional practices in literacy
- Work alongside classroom teachers to refine practice through classroom observation, coaching, and mentoring
- Building long‑term relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community
- Supporting instructional planning and classroom practice
- Working within the local context
- Collaborating with school staff to strengthen student outcomes
- Engaging with local knowledge, language, and culture
- Resiliency, adaptability, and resourcefulness (Qanuqtuurniq) are assets to employment and northern life
Located in the picturesque hamlet of Arviat, Nunavut, John Arnalukjuak High School serves the local community. The school has a population of approximately 375 students in a 9‑12 setting with a staff of 39. The school and community are steeped in a rich history of Inuit culture.

Education & Certification
- Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree
- Minimum of three (3) years of classroom teaching experience
- Experience teaching in a bilingual or ESL environment
- Valid teaching certificate recognized by, or eligible for certification in, Nunavut (internationally educated teachers who do not hold a Canadian teaching certificate must have their credentials evaluated through the Department of Education)
Language and Cultural Assets
- Ability to communicate in Inuktitut (verbal and written)
- Experience teaching in cross‑cultural, or northern‑Canada contexts
- Experience supporting Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit‑based education
Teaching Practice and Classroom Environment
- Training or experience in evidence‑based literacy instruction, structured literacy, and data‑based decision‑making
- Experience supporting educators in the implementation of formative assessment and differentiated instruction
- Experience in early literacy instruction and beginning reading development
- Experience implementing and analyzing formative and summative assessments, including reporting practices
- Experience in differentiated instruction and inclusive practices
- Training or experience using current assessment methods to guide learning
- Experience in creating a positive learning environment using classroom management practices and approaches (e.g., restitution, tribes, positives, effective behavior supports)
- Proficiency in the use of educational technology
Relationships and Student Engagement
- Experience in building respectful relationships with students, families, colleagues, and stakeholders
- Experience in fostering student wellbeing and engagement
- Experience in engaging with students beyond the classroom, as appropriate
Collaboration and Professional Practice
- Experience planning, facilitating, modeling, or coaching professional learning for adult educators
- Experience working as part of a school team or in a leadership role at the school, regional, or territorial level
- Salary Range: $93,906 - $147,243 (based on experience)
