Position Overview
The Teacher plans, designs, implements and assesses an appropriate instructional program in an elementary environment that guides and encourages a diverse group of students at all levels to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The Teacher designs learning experiences, monitors student progress, presents the information to parents, develops assessments, creates and reinforces classroom expectations, works with school administration to prepare students for a variety of assessments, and manages students outside the classroom, such as in school hallways and field trips.
At the elementary level, the Teacher may be assigned to teach students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The Teacher promotes healthy academic and social behaviors in children in a developmentally appropriate manner and consistently reinforces these behaviors. The Teacher also fosters independence through the gradual release of responsibilities, allowing students to develop the skills to perform tasks without assistance.
- Establishes a safe and supportive learning environment that enables each student to demonstrate agency, ownership, and reflection.
- Designs and implements authentic and engaging learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, competencies, and strategies to maximize student achievement with a variety of tools and instructional resources.
- Personalizes instruction based upon the needs of students.
- Assesses student growth as related to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
- Adheres to LCPS assessment and grading policy and guidelines.
- Monitors and supports student behavior in instructional settings and assists in managing behavior in other parts of the school, such as playgrounds and lunch.
- Works collaboratively with colleagues, students, parents, and the community to promote and support student learning.
- May direct the work of teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers to provide an effective learning environment.
- Supports and actively participates in the school's professional learning community to deepen understanding of curriculum, content, competencies, assessment, and the developmental needs of students.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.
- Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license, with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area.
- Demonstrated knowledge of elementary content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodology.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
- Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication and excellent human relations skills.
The employee usually engages in regular conversation, expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word, and must convey detailed instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. Frequent sitting or remaining stationary for long periods is required. The employee may need to lift up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or perform negligible force frequently or constantly to move objects.
This is an end-of-year (EOY) position.
