Job Overview
The Critical Environment Engineer will assist with the engineering related to the coordination, installation, and integration aspects of electrical and mechanical systems, operations, and maintenance for critical and non‑critical electrical & mechanical systems within the QTS portfolio. This role requires keen planning skills, the ability to lead through influence, and to be a proactive partner with a strong engineering orientation. The ideal candidate will have experience in electrical and mechanical systems and possess knowledge of large‑scale data centers (or similar environments), including state‑of‑the‑art electrical distribution systems, static UPS, emergency standby generation, fire alarm/suppression, monitoring systems, chiller, and large‑scale cooling systems.
This position requires work hours to support a 24x7, 365‑day data center environment.
- Provide technical support to all aspects of data center operations, including operation, maintenance, and repair of all mission‑critical equipment and systems to achieve 100% uptime and 100% compliance with all customer SLAs.
- Assist in all site construction activity and installations, coordinating with the QTS Development Team and external contractors to ensure system design, installation, and testing adhere to operational standards.
- Witness testing of all equipment during commissioning and validate sequence of operations and receipt of all operational documentation.
- Support local customer installations in coordination with Sales Engineering, Design & Construction, and Colocation Operations to coordinate site technical solutions, drawings for customer move‑ins and turn‑ups, including deployments and power circuit installations.
- Support implementation and audit of local standard operating procedures alongside corporate audit teams.
- Support various accreditation, certification, and compliance initiatives as may be required by QTS.
- Maintain compliance with local health & safety (e.g., OSHA) standards and national electrical and building codes.
- Interface with vendors, QTS Engineering, QTS Development, and peer operations organizations.
- Ensure adherence to all standard operating procedures (SOPs), method of procedures (MOPs), and emergency response procedures (ERPs) established for the critical environments and the formal change control process.
- Participate in the technical review and input on plans for all significant planned and emergency maintenance events for the facility, ensuring these activities are executed in a controlled and proven method to maintain reliability of critical loads.
- Use the Change Management Process to obtain approval for preventative and corrective maintenance.
- Commence and complete maintenance along with necessary documentation using the QTS process and software.
- Bachelor’s degree or professional equivalent in HVAC or critical power certifications, or equivalent professional experience.
- Ability to travel to other data center locations as required.
- U.S. citizenship required by law due to federal customer contracts.
- Two or more years of direct experience with engineering‑related activities in a technical or critical environment (e.g., data center, nuclear power, hospital, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, or industrial/commercial field engineering).
- Ability to develop solutions and create technical plans for projects.
- Willingness to think outside the box to find creative and innovative solutions that improve quality, reliability, and lower operating costs.
- Basic understanding of both mechanical and electrical equipment, systems, and design related to data centers.
- Knowledge of electricity and medium to low voltage electrical distribution systems.
- Experience with emergency backup systems (generators, UPS, battery backup).
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance and work order software systems, single‑line drawings, critical scripted work, and sequence of operations.
