Senior Electrical Engineer - Power Engineering

Job Description

Minimum

Educational Requirements:

BS Electrical Engineering

Experience: Minimum five years' work in a power engineering environment

Required Registrations: Registered Professional Engineer, preferred; or willing to become one when qualified.

Responsibilities
  • Lead team member working on electrical design projects from conceptual and study stage through construction completion.
  • Projects typically include electric power substations, transmission lines, distribution lines, load-side generation facilities, SCADA systems, fiber optic communication systems, and industrial distribution systems.
  • Conduct system studies: short circuit, arc flash, protective coordination, load flow, cost of service, rate, and economic feasibility.
  • Communicate effectively with management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors.
  • Prepare electrical equipment specifications, data sheets, RFQs, technical bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations.
  • Review electrical equipment, vendor drawings, and data.
  • Interface with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, detailers, and designers.
  • Participate in project schedule development, scope, budget staffing, and construction planning.
  • Manage change orders effectively.
  • Apply expert knowledge of electrical concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the industry.
  • Apply knowledge and experience to find both standard and non-standard design solutions for complex projects.
  • Perform quality control review of production drawings, calculations, and specifications.
  • Oversee construction administration, coordinate with field personnel to resolve design-related installation issues, calculations, field inspections, and testing of electrical systems.
  • Lead field inspections, installations, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.
  • Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
  • Build effective relationships with clients and contractors, and develop new business opportunities.
  • Ensure client satisfaction goals and expectations are met.
  • Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
  • Lead cost proposal development and qualification statements to meet financial performance targets and standards.
  • Prepare and present project budgets and cost estimates; report project performance.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to the electrical engineering practice; mentor less experienced engineers.
  • Adhere to QA/QC process and company/site safety policies.
  • Maintain effective communication with other engineering disciplines.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem‑solving environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15% of time.
  • Experience performing power quality measurements, troubleshooting, and analysis is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of power systems analysis for short‑circuit, arc‑flash, and breaker coordination studies—including use of SKM software— is highly desirable.
  • Experience with NFPA, IEEE, and NETA testing standards and practices.
