To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate should have at least two years of hands‑on experience in residential construction, strong communication and leadership skills for working effectively with diverse groups of volunteers, and the ability to confidently and safely use a variety of power tools. Experience reading construction plans and ensuring work meets quality and safety standards will also contribute to success in this position.
GeneralFunction
Reporting to the New Home Construction Field Manager, the Construction Supervisor will oversee the construction of Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity (AAHH) houses.
Essential Functions- Oversee and instruct up to 10 skilled or unskilled volunteers daily on AAHH projects in construction procedures, quality, and safety.
- Ensure all work performed on Habitat construction site(s) adheres to the AAHH Safety Policy.
- Ensure work complies with approved drawings, current building codes, and AAHH building practices.
- Supervise the construction of up to 3 homes from foundation to closing.
- Guarantee proper and sufficient materials and equipment are available to volunteers each day.
- Assist in the control, maintenance, storage, and security of all materials, tools, and equipment.
- Maintain a clean and orderly jobsite appearance.
- Supervise, motivate, and recognize volunteer work crews.
- Complete final walk‑through checklist and closing punch list for assigned houses.
- Participate in required department or affiliate‑wide meetings, events, professional development, training, and process improvement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Commitment to the mission and values of Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity.
- High School diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- At least two years’ experience in residential construction or one year full‑time staff or stipend volunteer experience with Habitat for Humanity’s construction programs.
- Previous experience teaching or supervising volunteers or students (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Effective interpersonal skills with a variety of people, personalities and backgrounds.
- Ability to give specific oral and written instruction and direction to individuals and groups.
- Ability to lead, manage, supervise and motivate volunteer teams.
- Ability to plan, schedule, prioritize, coordinate, delegate and manage multiple activities.
- Ability to analyze circumstances, make routine decisions, problem‑solve, and provide direction on problem resolution.
- Knowledge of residential construction to determine needed materials, and schedule, coordinate, and participate in construction activities including a working knowledge of residential building codes.
- Proficiency in using hand and power tools and instructing others on safe use.
- Ability to read and interpret standard residential construction blueprints and specifications.
- Basic mathematical aptitude to calculate building measurements, quantities, etc.
- Certified in first aid and CPR (or ability to be certified within three months of hiring).
- HFHI Competent Person Certification (or ability to be certified within 12 months of hiring).
The majority of the work is done outside on a construction work site. Daily exposure to dirt, dust, dampness, construction debris, extreme temperatures, construction noises, fumes and odor from construction materials will occur.
Must Be Able To- Stand or walk for the majority of a workday, including working on uneven surfaces.
- Apply extensive physical mobility, including reaching, lifting, holding, pushing, pulling, carrying, bending, climbing stairs and ladders, crawling, kneeling, arm and leg extension.
- Regularly lift 10–35 pounds; occasionally 75 pounds or more.
- See and judge distances and space relationships.
- Operate motor vehicles independently.
Pay Range: $27–$30 per hour.
