Camp Counselor / Assistant Coach
Age:
Must have graduated high school. Most counselors are college‑aged.
Experience:
Preferable to have worked at least one summer in a camp environment and/or significant childcare experience. Personal camp experience desirable. Preferable and desired athletic, high level of physical fitness. Suitable for college athletes or those studying Physical Education, Athletics, Sports Management, Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, Coaching, etc.
- Directly responsible for all campers living in the dorms: day‑to‑day involvement, ensuring they make friends, acclimate, grow toward potential, and become part of the community. Acts as early warning system for problems and uses a 24‑hour presence.
- Coaches: improve athletic skills and abilities, help implement coaching plans, use personal experiences to teach, challenge, and empower campers.
- Coach and run electives and recreational activities. Bring special talents or unique sports/activities to lead.
- Educators: assist the Director of Jewish life and faculty to create Jewish experiences, participate in T’Filah, run programs connecting campers to Jewish values, integrate deliberate and opportunistic educational experiences.
- Regular enthusiastic participation in camp programming
- Teaching and assisting Head Coaches in “Sport Majors”
- Organizing and leading “Sport Electives”
- Helping organize and lead evening programs
- Partnering with other counselors and staff in programming and supervision
- Ensuring campers follow good hygiene and health practices
- Notifying supervisor and nurse of any suspected health problems
- Keeping resident facilities clean and in good repair
- Helping campers keep track of belongings
- Knowing all emergency procedures and posting them in the bunk
- Reporting successes and issues via daily camper reports to Unit Heads
- Attending pre‑camp orientation and all staff meetings
Range $1800–2400 for a full summer commitment based on experience and skill.
Summer 2026 Dates- Staff Training Week begins Monday, June 8.
- Attendance at training camp is mandatory, along with pre‑arrival online meetings and training.
- Camp runs with campers from June 16 – July 27.
- May be reimbursed up to $500 for flights or gas, depending on travel distance.
- Dormitory housing provided with all three meals and multiple snacks in the campus dining hall.
Located in Asheville, NC on Asheville School’s state‑of‑the‑art athletic and camp facilities. Opened in 2010 with 60 campers, now welcomes over 850 campers each summer. Athletes from 37 different states and 8 countries participate in coaching and camp traditions. Campers master sports, build friendships, and explore Jewish identity (you do not need to be Jewish to work at camp). Two‑week sessions include four hours of intensive skill development and two hours of electives.
