Position Summary

The Parsons Math Lab at UNC Asheville is UNC Asheville's primary resource for Math assistance. This includes assistance to students in mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, and other STEM & quantitative disciplines. During a typical semester, 1 in 6 students will visit the Math Lab for on-the-spot assistance with an average of 6-7 visits per semester. The breadth and depth of academic assistance requires dedicated and experienced staff in mathematics instruction.

With guidance from the Director of the Math Lab (supervisor), the Math Lab Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the daily general Math Lab operations. This includes but is not limited to promoting and developing an environment of academic success for students by encouraging a positive attitude and self-actualized learning environment, instructing and tutoring students who seek help from the lab, and managing duties to maintain a cohesive and efficient operation of the Lab.

Managing duties include, training, mentoring and supervising student tutor employees.

The Coordinator will assist the Director with other duties of the Math Lab including assisting the Mathematics Department with administrative and curricula assignments. These duties include: proctoring exams for the department, assisting with organizing and promoting department events, substitute proctoring or teaching for instructors.

The Coordinator will act as a liaison between the lab and department, which requires the ability to collaborate and build rapport with faculty, staff, and students.

Required Education/Experience/Skills
  • Master's degree in Mathematics, or a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics with a minimum of four years' experience teaching/tutoring mathematics, statistics, physics, and/or computer science at various levels.
  • The successful candidate must be able to function professionally in a highly collaborative and increasingly dynamic organization.
  • Candidate must have experience managing and training other tutors and have organizational skills.
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
  • Master's degree in Mathematics, or a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics with a minimum of four years' experience teaching/tutoring mathematics, statistics, physics, and/or computer science at various levels.
  • Proficient skills in teaching and tutoring precalculus, calculus sequence, linear algebra, differential equations, various levels of statistics, and introductory physics I and II.
  • Familiarity with statistical computer software, Excel, Minitab, R, Python, C, and Java languages.
  • Candidates must be able to work within and with a dynamic community, possess effective communication skills and be willing to expand their knowledge to other math and science topics.

This position requires:

  • Extensive knowledge of mathematics: specifically, precalculus algebra, trigonometry, calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, statistics, and computer science programming.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of students and with many students and topics concurrently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to convey subject matter to students in a supportive manner.
