** Purpose of the position:
** This position is responsible for performing supervisory and specialized law enforcement work and assisting in directing the operations of the assigned division of the Sheriff’s Office.
** Essential Functions of the position:
*** Supervise the work of assigned division staff specializing in various types of crimes; review and evaluate work; advise on investigative techniques and strategies;
Handle personnel tasks, including disciplinary actions, hiring, and timecard and vacation approval.
* Oversee daily operations of the assigned division(s);
Receive reports and complaints, plan preliminary action to be taken, and assign to investigators; plan daily caseloads.
* Perform liability management, including the review of reports involving critical and non-critical incidents;
Review cases with investigators for accuracy and offer suggestions on how cases may be handled.
* Interview complainants, suspects, witnesses, and other persons who may have information related to crimes or suspected criminal activity;
Maintain communications with informers and surveillance over known agitators and other law violators;
Investigate and compare possible motive of crime to others of similar nature; review files and current bulletins published by Federal and State Bureaus of Investigation.
* Prepare detailed investigations and arrest reports; assemble and organize statements and evidence for presentation in court; attend court and present evidence and testimony.
* Assist in coordinating with other law enforcement agencies in conducting criminal investigations and making arrests.
* Confer with management as necessary regarding investigations and keeps informed of case progress.
* May assist staff with casework.
* Liaison between assigned divisions and other agencies.
* Oversee vehicle fleet, including assisting with scheduling of maintenance tasks as well as vehicle assignments.
* Attend meetings and participate in developing new procedures and policies governing enforcement division personnel.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

** Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and County attendance policies and procedures.

* Note:
This position has been identified as an emergency essential position and as such employees in this position may be needed to work, including after-hours, weekends and during a public emergency (to include but not limited to: floods, ice storms, disease outbreak, terrorist attack, etc).

** Receives direction regarding general objectives of assigned work, operates within division and agency policy using independent judgement in achieving assigned objectives; independently determines best methods and sequence to achieve assigned tasks.
** Supervisory/Leadership Responsibilities**:
Supervise one or more employees with responsibility for assignment and flow of work, employee development, appraisal, and eliminating ordinary difficulties. Work activities likely affect the accuracy, reliability or acceptability of services to the extent that others rely on the advice given in order to make decisions.
** Decision Making and Problem Solving:
** Problems may be of a more ambiguous level requiring a range of possible solutions. Decisions are based on understanding of policies and procedures and requires critical thinking. May develop new strategies to deal with problems.
** Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
*** Knowledge of modern criminal investigative practices and procedures, including federal, state, and local laws relative to criminal investigations.
* Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures.
* Knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization, and administration.
* Knowledge of the current literature, trends, and developments in the law enforcement investigations field.
* Skill in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment.
* Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.
* Ability to interpret and apply laws to specific cases and to exercise sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
* Ability to use small office equipment, computers, and technical applications.
* Ability to create plans for and guide implementation of capital improvement plans or programs.
