Sterile Processing Technician or Surgical Technician

JOB SUMMARY

• Responsible for cleaning, sterilizing and assembling equipment, supplies and instruments.

• Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
• Cleans, sterilizes and assembles equipment, supplies and instruments.
• Decontaminates surgical instruments, container syringes, surgical linen and equipment.
• Prepares packs of supplies and instruments.
• Prepares control system for supplies processed.
• Places sterilized items in proper storage area after processing.
• Performs other assigned duties as needed.
• Good mechanical aptitude, with ability to troubleshoot and work independently.
• Must have the ability to identify all surgical instruments immediately to respond to emergency situations which may develop in the Operating Room.
• Must demonstrate competence in the assembly and preparation of complex instrument trays for a variety of surgical cases and do so in a minimal amount of time during urgent or emergency procedures. (10-20 min. maximum).

• Minimum requirement:
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Operating Room Technician Program Completion, Sterile Processing Program Completion, or one year post operating room/central service experience.
  • Obtain Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) and/or Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA), (CRCST) within one year of hire.
• Preferred qualifications:
  • HSPA Certification of Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) within one year of hire.

• Constantly works near moving mechanical parts.
• Constantly exposed to blood and/or body fluids and infection.
• Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
• Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

• Frequently required to stand; walk; sit.
• Constantly use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
• Constantly reach with hands and arms: climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell.
• Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
