Maintenance Worker, Building Maintenance
The Town of Ashland seeks qualified, experienced, and energetic candidates for the Light Equipment Operator position in the Water/Sewer Division of the Department of Public Works. This full‑time, 40‑hour per week, non‑exempt position is represented by the DPW Union and offers a competitive salary within the city’s collective bargaining agreement.
SalaryGrade H03: $23.4302/hr – $25.7102/hr (steps 1‑3). Full range for H03 is $23.4302/hr – $31.3865/hr upon successful completion of probation and required licensing, the range will move to Grade H04: $25.1533/hr – $33.5161/hr.
Probation and LicensesNew hires hired after July 1, 2024 will begin with a six‑month probationary period. Successful completion will allow union membership. New employees must obtain a Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with air‑brake endorsement within six months, and a Hoisting Engineer with 2A, 1C endorsement within six months. Failure to obtain these credentials is just cause for termination.
Responsibilities- General labor and landscaping tasks (mowing, leaf blowing, weed whacking, tree work, raking, snow shoveling, hand tools).
- Operate vehicles and equipment for construction, maintenance, snow removal, and related projects.
- Assist in operating all sewer and water stations.
- Maintain hand tools and small power tools.
- Lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, and work in tight quarters.
- Work independently when needed.
- Record tie sheets, backflow reports, dig safes, and work orders.
- Check vehicles and equipment for proper operation and maintenance, reporting problems to supervisor or mechanic.
- Interact positively and professionally with the public regarding meter changes and other services.
Position available for all essential services including water and sewer related failures, snow and ice operations, and emergencies outside regular hours.
Qualifications- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Basic construction knowledge.
- Follow directions on projects.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, coworkers, and public.
- Communicate effectively, confirming understanding when direction is given.
- Understand and properly operate tools and equipment.
- Follow all safety procedures related to job responsibilities.
- Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with air‑brake endorsement.
- Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer with 2A, 1C endorsement within six months of employment.
