Overview

A qualified Paramedic administers first-aid treatment to and transports sick or injured persons to medical facility, working as member of emergency medical team. The paramedic responds to instructions from emergency medical dispatcher and drives a specially equipped emergency vehicle to the specified location, monitors communications to maintain contact with Controller, removes or assists in removal of victims from scene, determines nature and extent of illness or injury to establish first aid procedures, administers prescribed treatment at the site or vehicle, communicates with medical personnel at the facility, assists in removal of victims from vehicle, maintains vehicles and equipment, and may assist in controlling crowds, protecting valuables, or perform other duties.

The paramedic may also assist professional medical personnel in emergency treatment administered at the medical facility.

Responsibilities Patient Care and Customer Service (% Time: 80%)
  • Meet and exceed the National Standard of Care for Advanced Life Support.
  • Meet and exceed all patient care standards of Community Care Ambulance.
  • Adhere to Community Care Ambulance policies and procedures.
  • Administer first-aid treatment and life-support care to sick or injured persons in a pre‑hospital setting.
  • Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as stomach suction, airway management or heart monitoring, during ambulance ride.
  • Observe, record, and report to the physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs and treatment.
  • Immobilize patient for placement on stretcher and ambulance transport, using backboard or other spinal immobilization device.
  • Maintain vehicles and medical and communication equipment, and replenish first-aid equipment and supplies.
  • Assess nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures.
  • Communicate with dispatchers and treatment center personnel to provide information about the situation, to arrange reception of victims, and to receive instructions for further treatment.
  • Comfort and reassure patients.
  • Decontaminate ambulance interior following treatment of patient with infectious disease and report case to proper authorities.
  • Operate equipment such as electrocardiograms (EKGs), external defibrillators and bag‑valve mask resuscitators in advanced life‑support environments.
  • Ultimately responsible for all action of entire crew.
Patient Documentation (% Time: 10%)
  • Complete and submit patient care reports as required in a timely fashion.
  • Observe, record, and report to the physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs and treatment.
Daily Preparedness (% Time: 5%)
  • Make sure squad and all needed equipment is available and in working order.
Training and Meetings (% Time: 5%)
  • Attend mandatory training and meetings.
Minimum Education And Experience

Education:

Graduate of an EMT‑Paramedic course that meets or exceeds the National Standard Curriculum current standards.

Experience

A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.

  • Medicine knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities.
  • Customer and Personal Service knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
  • English Language knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Education and Training knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Public Safety and Security knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Transportation knowledge of principles and methods for medical transportation of people.
