Patient Care Tech

Summary

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Patient Care Technician processes physician orders and records appropriate information, assists Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses in patient care, and maintains communications within and between the Emergency Department and other departments.

• Assist in all aspects of patient care and non‑patient care within the scope of practice.
• Provide patient care as assigned by physician or nurse, which may include measuring vital signs, specimen collection, administering blood glucose testing, transporting patients, measuring intake and output, and electronic documentation.
• Provide direct observation and monitoring of patients deemed to be at risk to self or others.
• Perform clerical functions including maintaining chart order, answering telephones, and entering items/orders in EPIC – ASAP.
• Coordinate patient flow of information in collaboration with the physician and caregivers to maintain communication between departments.
• Assist with all aspects of patient care and non‑patient care (e.g., cleanliness of unit, ordering of supplies) within the scope of practice as assigned by RN and document in EPIC – ASAP as appropriate.
• Assist with the maintenance of supplies and equipment.
• Comply with all safety and infection control standards related to the position.
• Utilize appropriate interpersonal communication that facilitates productive relationships with other team members.
• Complete required competencies.
• Clarify any unclear communication between members of the healthcare team.
• Assume all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Enrollment in or completion of an accredited Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, or Nursing Assistant program preferred.
• Hospital experience preferred.
• Interpersonal, clerical, numerical, and manual dexterity skills, color vision, and near visual acuity.
• Proper lifting techniques and body mechanics.
• Ability to read, write, and do math as generally demonstrated by a high school diploma or GED.

Basic Life Support (BLS) required – will be obtained during hospital orientation.
