Position Title

School Bus Driver

Position Summary

The purpose of the School Bus Driver position is to safely transport students to and from school as well as off-campus school-related activities.

Eligibility and Compensation

Hourly and full-time compensation provided by the District according to the SY 2024‑25 Hourly ESP Schedule. ASD offers district‑funded employee and dependent health benefits including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance. Other benefits may include paid leave, CO PERA enrollment with district contribution, TSA options, free transportation for employees from Carbondale to Aspen, employee assistance program, wellness program, and supplemental insurance (cancer, disability, etc.).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate a school bus safely and lawfully on an assigned route following Colorado Rules and Regulations Governing Operation of School Transportation Vehicles Manual.
  • Maintain order and safety among students on the bus.
  • Drive large school buses for extended periods, including off‑campus special activity trips, in varied environments from congested city streets to mountainous roadways.
  • Make responsible route and stop selections for activity trips to ensure safety of passengers and vehicle.
  • Perform pre‑ and post‑trip bus inspections and periodic student evacuation drills in compliance with district rules and regulations.
  • Check the bus daily for cleanliness and report any suspected malfunctions.
  • Report all student incidents, route stops, road conditions, time changes, and grievances to the Director of Transportation immediately.
  • Read and adhere to operation procedures outlined in the Colorado School Vehicle Instruction Manual.
  • Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action.
  • Ensure loaded equipment is stored safely per C.D.E. regulations.
  • Be available for extra driving as required by the District.
  • Report misconduct on the bus that could endanger passengers to the Director of Transportation.
  • Fully cooperate with sponsors on activity trips.
  • Adhere to Board policy and Colorado State Law.
  • Report any citations immediately to the Transportation Director and comply with insurance pool standards.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Colorado traffic safety laws, signs, signals, and devices.
  • Knowledge of safe motor vehicle operation and vehicle maintenance checks.
  • Organized, prepared, punctual, and able to meet deadlines, enhancing the image of public education.
  • Willingness to learn new information and complete required bus driving courses.
  • Ability to get along with children and command their respect.
  • Learn and complete scheduled routes in a timely manner, displaying flexibility with schedule changes.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with children, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders.
  • Observe all district policies and procedures.
  • Clear oral and written communication in English; bilingual Spanish is a plus.
  • Pass state‑required physical exam and random drug testing per Colorado DOE Rules and Regulations.
  • Pass a background check and drug/alcohol test upon hiring.
  • Familiarity with computers, email, and Google products.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver's License and special school bus operator's permit.
  • First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain.
  • High School education or equivalency.
  • 4 to 6 years of driving experience preferred.
Work Environment
  • Exposure to noise, dirt/dust, odors or fumes, hazardous materials or situations, and temperature extremes.
Essential

Physical Requirements
  • Occasional standing.
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs (possibly over 50 lbs for special needs buses).
  • Ability to lower oneself to the ground to assist students during emergency evacuation.
  • Frequent reaching, sitting, and repetitive motions.
