Key description
A Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in a hospital setting provides direct patient care and supports nursing staff in delivering efficient, high-quality care. Working under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or other clinical professionals, hospital CNAs assist with a variety of clinical and non‑clinical tasks to ensure patient comfort, safety, and recovery in the department to which they are assigned.
Key Responsibilities- Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, toileting, and feeding.
- Measure and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration rates.
- Help patients with mobility, including transferring from beds to wheelchairs and repositioning to prevent pressure injuries.
- Support nurses with medical procedures by preparing equipment and ensuring patient readiness.
- Monitor patient status and promptly report any changes in condition or behavior to nursing staff.
- Maintain cleanliness of patient rooms and ensure a safe, sanitary environment.
- Transport patients for tests, procedures, and discharge as needed.
- Accurately document care provided and observations in hospital records.
- A working knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge and skills required to provide excellent patient care.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Current OSBN (Oregon State Board of Nursing) CNA certification required.
- Current BLS certification through the American Heart Association is required.
- Graduate of a certified Nursing Assistant program.
- Minimum Experience:
Acute care facility experience preferred. - Continuing
Education:
Must attend required in‑services.
Ability to lift and transfer patients is required, usually with the assistance of co‑workers. Normal or corrected vision is required. Normal or corrected hearing is necessary to distinguish differences in monitor alarms, heartbeats, and breathing. Manual dexterity is required to operate equipment. Subject to physical and emotional stress of work environment. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases. Works inside. Walking and standing much of the time while on duty.
Long shifts necessary ject to occasional physical and emotional stress within a fast‑paced environment. Pushes/pulls loaded adult stretchers, beds, wheelchairs, crash carts and equipment carts. Transfers patients to/from cars, stretchers, beds, chairs and ambulates as necessary. Tolerates bending, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling for 8‑12 hours. Lifts or carries up to 50 lbs.
