The Emergency Department Staff Nurse is directly responsible and accountable for the care given to their Emergency assigned patients. This includes assessment of patient needs, including life threatening emergencies, development of a flexible nursing plan of care, administration and evaluation of nursing care and supervision of others in the delivery of nursing care.
Job RequirementsKnowledge of and skills in nursing principles and procedures; knowledge and skills in techniques of patient care. Must be able to read and write English as well as speak and understand English. Must be willing to flex up for short term needs such as vacations or illness. The person must be dependable regarding attendance and self-motivated. Unplanned work absence must be held to a minimum.
License/ Certification
- RN currently licensed with the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
- BLS required upon hire through the American Heart Association.
- ACLS, PALS/ENPC required; new graduates or employees who are new to this unit will have six months to complete ACLS, PALS/ENPC through the American Heart Association.
- TNCC required within a year of hire in this unit. CEN preferred.
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Previous satisfactory acute care hospital experience of one year preferred. Previous satisfactory Emergency Department Care experience relevant to the patient population of this unit or completion of an approved Emergency Department course. For RNs graduating within the last 12 months, or RNs that have not practiced in an acute care facility within the last 24 months, and have not previously completed a residency program will be required to complete the CMH-provided Nurse Residency program.
PhysicalDemands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance
Works inside. Walking and standing much of the time while on duty. Ability to lift and transfer patients is required, usually with assistance from co-workers. Requires normal or corrected vision and hearing. Requires manual dexterity to operate equipment. Subject to physical and emotional stress. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases. Pushes/pulls adult stretchers, beds, wheelchairs, crash carts, and equipment carts. Transfers patients to/from cars, stretchers, beds, chairs and ambulates as necessary.
Tolerates bending, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling for 8–12 hours (shift dependent). Lifts or carries up to 50 lbs.
