Position Summary
The student photojournalist will work in the Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC) within the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), supporting the creation of visual content that enhances storytelling across digital and print platforms.
This position offers the opportunity to capture and curate engaging photography, assist with content repurposing and visual adaptations of previously published stories, and collaborate with writers and designers to develop multi-format stories for CAES Almanac, social media, the CAES website and other UGA communication platforms.
This role is ideal for a student interested in documentary‑style photography, visual journalism, portraiture and strategic communication. The student photojournalist will also be trained in professional outreach and logistical planning to schedule shoots and interviews with faculty, staff and students across departments.
The ideal candidate is available to work 15 hours per week. Hours are flexible and can be structured around the student’s class schedule. The intern will report jointly to two members of the CAES OMC team for mentorship and supervision.
Duties/Responsibilities- Capture original photography and supporting cutline and metadata information for CAES news stories, profiles and feature content
- Attend and cover college and Extension events as needed
- Collaborate with writers and designers to create visually compelling stories
- Repurpose existing content for new formats
- Assist in creating infographics or data visualizations using Adobe products, Flourish or similar tools
- Write professional outreach emails to schedule photo shoots, confirm interview details and gather background info
- Work with the OMC team to plan and execute social and web content that connects with target audiences
- Organize, edit and apply metadata and archive photo assets for future use
- Add and archive your work in Photo Shelter, our digital asset manager
- Other related duties based on the student’s interests and experience
- As available, assist and act as a second shooter on editorial and marketing photoshoots with professional photographers
- Demonstrated experience with photography and photo editing
- Familiarity with composition, lighting and basic photojournalism principles
- Proficiency in writing and applying metadata
- Proficiency in Adobe Lightroom and/or Photoshop
- Experience with Associated Press (AP) style and writing
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Willingness to learn about agricultural and environmental subject matter
- Work independently, meet deadlines and coordinate with multiple team members
- Experience creating infographics, using visual storytelling tools (e.g., Canva, Flourish), or curating photo essays
- Prior coursework or experience in journalism, photojournalism, visual storytelling, marketing or design
- Bonus:
Experience writing or publishing content for a campus publication, blog or media outlet
