About the College of Environment and DesignUGA’s College of Environment and Design (CED) hosts the oldest landscape architecture program in the Southeast and one of the largest BLA programs in the United States. CED offers degrees in Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation, Urban Planning and Design, plus master’s programs in Construction Management, Cultural Landscapes, Environmental Ethics, and Historic Preservation, and minors in Environmental Design, Historic Preservation, Landscape Studies, and Urban Planning.
PositionSummary
Full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant/Associate Professor focused on health and the built environment, broadly defined. The successful candidate will contribute to one or more of CED’s professional program areas—Historic Preservation, Landscape Architecture, or Urban Planning and Design—and teach a variety of courses appropriate to their background, including lecture and seminar courses and, where relevant, design studios.
Applicants will provide an opportunity to connect with UGA’s emerging health initiatives, including the Medical School, Nursing School, and a forthcoming horticultural therapy certificate program. Depending on the program area, teaching will cover topics such as health‑supportive design, health‑care facility design, therapeutic landscapes, healthy communities planning, environmental justice, and regional planning.
Responsibilities- Teach lecture and seminar courses in the chosen program area, and design studios for Landscape Architecture or Urban Planning candidates.
- Develop and deliver courses related to health and built environment, including the creation of a large‑format general education course that integrates health and the built environment with core U.S.G. education areas such as ethics, critical thinking, sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff across health initiatives and CED’s professional programs.
- Engage in scholarly, professional practice, or creative work that advances knowledge of health and built environment issues.
- Terminal degree appropriate for appointment within one of CED’s professional program areas.
- For Landscape Architecture candidates: accredited terminal degree in landscape architecture (MLA or equivalent) or a BLA with a terminal degree in an allied design discipline such as Master of Architecture.
- For Historic Preservation candidates: MHP or a related terminal degree (e.g., Master of Architecture, PhD in Public History).
- For Urban Planning candidates:
PhD in Urban Planning and Design or a closely related field. - Demonstrated scholarly, professional practice, or creative engagement with health and the built environment, broadly interpreted.
- At least one year of university‑level teaching experience.
- Advanced research training (e.g., PhD, MHP, MLA) in a relevant field.
- Professional licensure for Landscape Architecture candidates and AICP certification for Urban Planning candidates (advantageous).
- Strong commitment to teaching, mentoring, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of innovative curriculum.
- Demonstrated research, design, or practice excellence recognized by peers and supported by awards or publications.
