Position Summary:
The Department of Geography at the University of Georgia invites applications for a full‑time, academic‑year (9‑month), Associate/Full Professor position with tenure in Tropical Meteorology with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2026. This position is part of a university‑wide cluster hire in the area of Disasters, Risk, and Communication, supported through the Presidential Strategic Hiring Initiative (PHI). The successful candidate will join a vibrant and interdisciplinary research and instructional community addressing pressing challenges associated with climate extremes, compound disasters, risk communication, and resilience.
We seek a specialist in tropical meteorology, with interest in hazard and risk communication. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an active, externally funded research program and will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty across campus, including those affiliated with the NSF‑funded Center for Innovation in Risk, Catastrophes, and Decisions (CIRCAD), the UGA Research Institute (UGARI), and the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems (IRIS), among others.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise as well as existing upper‑level courses such as Atmospheric Dynamics, Atmospheric Physics, Atmospheric Thermodynamics, Mesoscale and Radar Meteorology, Satellite Meteorology, Synoptic Meteorology, and Weather Analysis and Forecasting.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences, Geography, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
Additional Requirements:
- Candidates must have qualifications and academic credentials that are commensurate with the promotion and tenure guidelines at the University of Georgia and the Department of Geography. These guidelines can be found at (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)..
- To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an Associate Professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution.
- Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

- Strong background in extreme weather phenomena in tropical environments.
- Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, high‑quality teaching, student mentorship, and public engagement.
