Position Summary
Permanent part‑time Environmental Educator at Burton 4‑H Center located on Tybee Island, Georgia. The primary responsibility is to independently lead K-12 grade students through multidisciplinary classes in an outdoor setting. Class subjects offered include life and earth science, ecology, marine science, survival skills, team building, high‑and‑low roped challenges, and pioneer living skills. Other responsibilities include animal care, maintenance of teaching areas and resources, facilities, grounds, and general operations of the center.
Key Responsibilities- Independent instruction (approximately 50% of time): lead K‑12 grade students through multidisciplinary classes in an outdoor setting for 1‑2 or 3‑day field studies.
- Curriculum development & instruction (≈50% of time): teach classes, implement new, innovative, academic, and research‑based curriculum and classes in keeping with state and national standards.
- Maintenance & general support (≈40% of time): maintain and clean facilities and grounds, office and reception work, scheduling of school and conference group visits, dining‑hall assistance, housekeeping, on‑call duties, and general center operations.
- Animal care & teaching‑area maintenance (≈10% of time): care for live teaching animals (reptiles, amphibians, etc.) and maintain the herpetology lab and other teaching areas.
- Work when exposed to outdoor elements, including adverse weather conditions.
- Lift 20–40 pounds and walk approximately 3 miles daily.
- Include driving CDL school buses as required.
- Technical knowledge in the field acquired through apprenticeship, a 2‑year degree, or professional certificate.
- Commitment, genuine interest in child development, dynamic personality, well‑developed communication skills, creativity, and leadership ability.
- Ability to teach a wide variety of subjects to K‑12 grade youth.
- Broad knowledge of outdoor education and ability to work in an outdoor setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work with and care for live teaching animals (reptiles, amphibians, and others).
