Position Overview

The Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Spanish Applied Linguistics with a specialization in Spanish Second Language Acquisition and/or Bilingualism to begin fall 2026. The responsibilities of the position include teaching a 2/2 course load in Spanish Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and/or Bilingualism, which will include a graduate‑level course on different approaches to SLA research taught in Spanish, in addition to introductory courses in Hispanic linguistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels, maintaining an active research program, service to the department, and mentoring student research in the MA and PhD programs in Hispanic and Romance Linguistics.

Responsibilities
  • Teach a 2/2 course load in Spanish Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and/or Bilingualism.
  • Develop and teach a graduate‑level course on SLA research approaches taught in Spanish.
  • Teach introductory courses in Hispanic linguistics at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Maintain an active research program in Spanish SLA and/or Bilingualism.
  • Provide department service and mentor student research in the MA and PhD programs.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Spanish, Romance Languages, Second Language Acquisition/Bilingualism, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field. ABD applicants must have a degree in hand at the time of appointment.
  • Native/near‑native proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • At least one year of experience teaching at the university level, including as teaching/graduate assistant and at least one semester teaching Spanish linguistics at the university level.
  • Proficiency in an additional language spoken in the Americas, Europe, or Africa (including indigenous languages, heritage languages).
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • An active research agenda in Spanish SLA and/or Bilingualism, with evidence of scholarly productivity appropriate to career stage and potential for external funding.
  • Interest in developing a research methods course (including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods).
  • Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and/or graduate students, including supervision of student research.
  • Interest in developing or teaching a research methods course (quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed methods).
Special Interests
  • Language pedagogy and assessment (including critical approaches, experimental pedagogy, and language assessment).
  • Language acquisition and cognition (including first language acquisition, heritage language acquisition, and psycho linguistic approaches).
  • Sociolinguistics and language in society (including variation and contact, language attrition/loss, language policy and planning, raciolinguistics, queer linguistics, and translanguaging).
