This job is a permanent part‑time position as an Environmental Educator at Burton 4‑H Center located on Tybee Island, Georgia. The primary responsibility is to independently lead K‑12 grade students through multidisciplinary classes in an outdoor setting. Class subjects offered include life and earth science, ecology, and marine science. Other responsibilities include animal care, maintenance of teaching areas and resources, facilities, grounds, and support of general operations of the facility.
Knowledge,Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Commitment, genuine interest in child development, dynamic personality, well‑developed communication skills, creativity, and leadership ability
- Skill in teaching a wide variety of subjects to K‑12 grade youth
- Broad knowledge of outdoor education and able to work in an outdoor setting
- Ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to work with and care for live teaching animals (reptiles, amphibians, and others)
- Work when exposed to outdoor elements including but not limited to adverse physical and weather conditions.
- Lift 20-40 pounds and walk approximately 3 miles daily.
- Driving to include CDL school buses.
- Educational Duties (50%):
- Independently lead K-12 grade students through multidisciplinary classes in an outdoor setting for 1‑2 or 3‑day field studies.
- Class subjects offered include life and earth science, survival skills, team building, high‑and low‑ropes challenges, and pioneer living skills.
- Teach classes, and implement new, innovative, academic, and research‑based curriculum and classes in keeping with state and national standards.
- General Operations Duties (40%):
- Maintenance and cleanup of facilities and grounds. Dining hall assistance. General support of overall center operations.
- Office and reception work, scheduling school and conference group visits, working in the dining hall or kitchen as needed, conference group support, on‑call duties, maintenance projects, housekeeping duties, drive buses for group programming.
- Animal Care Duties (10%):
- Animal care and maintenance of teaching areas including the herpetology lab.
