Position Summary

As a faculty member in the Fanning Institute, the Associate Director is responsible for securing, managing, and building a portfolio of client work that aligns with the Institute’s vision and mission. The role includes consultation, facilitation, training, technical assistance, and applied research to clients on diverse leadership development needs. The Associate Director assists the Director in implementing strategic plan, budgeting, personnel, marketing and communications, instruction and training, and research and evaluation, and represents the Institute in internal and external meetings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Director in implementing the vision, mission, and strategic plan of the Institute (strategy, budgeting, personnel, marketing and communications, instruction and training, and research and evaluation).
  • Manage the Conflict Resolution and Youth Serving Programming team of faculty and program coordination staff.
  • Build project teams of faculty/staff to leverage Institute expertise on conflict resolution and youth‑serving client projects and initiatives.
  • Develop, manage, and expand a portfolio of funded work (grants, client contracts, work agreements) aligned with the Institute’s mission and vision.
  • Secure funding for work, including federally funded grant opportunities; provide instruction, facilitation, mediation, and technical assistance to clients.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with key partners to identify and respond to client needs and develop innovative programs and services.
  • Maintain project budgets, agreements, and project management processes; ensure contractual deliverables are met.
  • Oversee youth development, leadership, and educational programs (mentoring initiatives, workshops, conference participation). Provide guidance to team members and volunteers on safety and policy compliance.
  • Monitor and report on program impact through data analysis and participant feedback; support funding through grant opportunities and sponsor ships.
  • Contribute to field knowledge through research, scholarly publications, conference presentations, and webinars.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities in leadership development, conflict transformation, grant writing, and related areas.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for private giving and foundation development.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate or terminal degree in education, public administration, social work, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of leadership development, organizational development, or conflict resolution.
  • Extensive background in developing and managing programs that provide services and assistance to individuals and communities.
  • Experience managing people, developing and monitoring budgets, managing projects in higher education, and working with faculty across departments.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of the Institute’s mission, goals, services, and range of expertise.
  • Ability to secure external contracts and build capacity for contract obligations.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, with competing priorities, resources, and budgets.
  • History of working directly with a wide range of clients.
  • Commitment and ability to interact positively and supportively with colleagues, agency leaders, elected officials, and agency staff.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of the complexities involved in the Institute’s mission and willingness to work through complexities to deliver solutions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Physical Demands

Ability to sit at a desk, drive a state vehicle, carry up to 25 pounds, and facilitate in front of large groups.
