Experience with GIS, spatial analysis, data curation and archiving, and USFS operations and stakeholder engagement.

Position Summary

Spatial analyst will support baseline surveys of river habitat for freshwater mussels in the four national forests in the Great Lakes basin. This staff member will be responsible for assisting with locating, entering, and curating existing historical survey data from stakeholders and integrating these data with contemporary survey data in this project. The analyst will assist with survey site selection, lead survey data QA/QC, analyze survey data in relation to active forest management and infrastructure projects, and will support the Project Coordinator in generating a report summarizing the mussel assemblages observed.

Data and geospatial analyses will support Lakewide Action and Management Plans (LAMP) for the Great Lakes objectives. This position has a limited term appointment expected to end 2 years after start date. The position may be extended beyond the initial term, contingent upon continued funding.

Physical Demands

Primarily analytical, with some opportunity for field work – must be able to carry up to 30 pounds up to 1 km on uneven terrain.

Responsibilities
  • Curation of survey data: locate, QA/QC, map, and archive existing historical survey data; lead survey data QA/QC, mapping, and archiving for contemporary surveys; integrate historical and contemporary survey data with respect to location, habitat and streambed traits.
  • Assist with ongoing survey site selection; locate, curate, and integrate geospatial data (e.g., streamflow, hydrology, land use, temperature, USFS infrastructure) to support site selection efforts; use integrative analysis of spatial data to identify best sites for new field surveys; build maps of planned survey efforts and update to reflect surveying efforts.
  • Support regional Great Lakes data and spatial analyses: curate data and conduct spatial analyses to support Lakewide Area Management Plan (LAMP) goals of sustaining and restoring habitats to support healthy populations of native aquatic species and high water quality; communicate results to LAMP stakeholders.
  • Support Project Coordinator: engage with USFS stakeholders primarily related to historical survey data and efforts; develop report summarizing mussel assemblages observed.
