Position Summary
The Environmental Affairs Program assists the university community in complying with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. The Environmental Affairs Professional (EAP) is a highly responsible professional level position working under general direction.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in a related field of science or engineering and 2 years of professional experience
- 5+ years of experience
- Oversee incorporation and implementation of university, state, federal, and local regulations, policies, standards, best practices, and guidelines
- Apply extensive knowledge and understanding of environmental regulatory principles, practices, and equipment to determine if proper methods and procedures are utilized and to assure compliance
- Design and implement corrective actions for non-standard situations requiring immediate attention
- Track emerging issues where limited information exists
- Serve as a member, ex officio member, or technical expert for institutional safety and/or compliance committee(s)
- Plan, develop, implement, and improve compliance initiatives and programs in accordance with Title V, Clean Air Act, Public Drinking Water Systems, Clean Water Act, Underground Injection Control, Spill Prevention, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans, Universal Waste Plans, Used Oil Program, Petroleum Storage Tank Management Program, Environmental Spill or Release Response, PCBs monitoring, Groundwater Remediation Site Management, and other related programs
- Work directly with administrators, faculty, and staff to assess proposed activities or operations to determine permitting requirements
- Work directly with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies to determine necessary permits, complete the application process, and obtain permits
- Coordinate permit compliance reporting to state and federal regulatory agencies through GEOS and NetDMR
- Conduct audits of less experienced practitioners and investigate difficult or complex situations
- Identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk; develop and implement corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues
- Inform the Environmental Affairs Manager and the AVP for Environmental Safety of important programmatic, regulatory, University leadership, campus, and media concerns in area of environmental compliance
- Serve as a primary resource for information, instruction, or clarification for about any aspect of environmental compliance
- Support UGA Dining Services in the acquisition and maintenance of food service permits; communicate changes in policy; coordinate with the Athens-Clarke County Health Department; track health inspection scores; coordinate with Athletics and Health Department for food service inspections; review construction and renovation projects for compliance; serve as liaison between Dining Services and Health Department; conduct food safety mock inspections; provide customer service;
coordinate with septic tank permits and site evaluations; coordinate compliance inspections for pools and spas; serve as Public Employee Hazardous Chemical Right-to-Know Coordinator; develop, review, and implement Right-to-Know Plan; coordinate hazardous chemicals inventory; coordinate Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plans; provide training; serve as Alternate Responsible Official for the environmental compliance area; participate in incident response team; perform other duties as assigned
- Technical expertise in environmental regulatory permitting and compliance; extensive knowledge of state and federal regulations; expert knowledge of environmental monitoring and sampling methods
- Leadership aptitude focusing on customer service, safety, and compliance; ability to work effectively within a team across discipline boundaries
