Position: Deputy Sheriff / Corporal

Overview

Deputy Sheriff / Sheriff Corporal position with a $10,000 hiring incentive (effective October 1, 2024) for newly hired deputies/corporal, subject to eligibility and continuation of grant/funding and managerial approval. Lateral entry rank and starting base salary depend on prior law enforcement experience. Incremental incentive payments of $3,000 after 3 months of service, $3,000 after 6 months, and $4,000 after 12 months (totaling $10,000).

This incentive is not added to base salary. Qualification may vary by prior experience and performance. The program is funded collaboratively by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget (OPB), Public Safety and Community Violence Reduction (PSCVR) Grant, and the Athens-Clarke County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). Continuation is subject to grant availability, CCSO funding, and Manager approval.

Deputy Sheriff / Corporal applicants with qualified (BLE certified) prior experience may be eligible for higher placement/salary in the step plan.

Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for the job and may be required or assigned as needed:

  • When assigned to the Jail Section: manage inmate admission, searches, identification, medical determination, inmate population preparation, medication dispensing coordination with jail medical staff, meal distribution, inmate supervision, safety and security of inmates, and operation of jail-related systems (GCIC/NCIC, JMS) and records.
  • Maintain order and security within the jail, monitor inmate behavior, conduct searches, supervise housing and inmate work assignments, and document daily activities and incidents.
  • When assigned to the Field Section: provide courthouse/courtroom security, transport inmates, search facilities, supervise jurors, escort inmates to court and other activities, respond to emergencies, and perform warrant/civil process duties.
  • Serve warrants and civil process, conduct investigations and interviews, preserve evidence, and assist in prosecutions; respond to emergencies and disasters; provide aid to victims; travel as required for transportation of inmates and compliance with extradition orders.
  • Operate and maintain assigned equipment and vehicles in accordance with agency policies; maintain records and reports in compliance with procedures.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of sheriff’s office operations, law enforcement/investigative techniques, jail and field policies, court procedures, and related regulations.
  • Knowledge in first aid/CPR; computer literacy (GCIC/NCIC/JMS) and other crime/records systems; defensive tactics; weapon handling.
  • Ability to work under stress, physically restrain or arrest individuals as needed, and qualify with firearms semi-annually.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; ability to prepare clear reports and interact with management, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to adapt to complex interpersonal situations, exercise independent judgment, and maintain team-based work relationships.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
    United States citizen; at least 18 years of age.
  • Current POST certification as per Georgia mandates; ability to qualify/re-qualify with service weapon(s) semiannually; valid driver’s license.
  • GCIC Security and Awareness training within 10 days of hire; CPR/First Aid certification within 3 months;
    Basic Jail Certification within 6 months.
  • Class A or B CDL with passenger endorsement if assigned to transporting inmates by bus; complete core jail training modules within specified timelines (jail vs field assignments).
  • Previous law enforcement or corrections experience preferred;
    Sheriff Corporal requires two years of related experience or equivalent.
Physical & Other Requirements
  • Physically able to operate police vehicles and equipment; capable of heavy lifting and enduring strenuous activity; able to work long shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays; 12-hour shifts from 7:45 to 7:45 with possible overtime.
  • Must meet required sensory, motor, and cognitive abilities; able to read, interpret laws and directives, and communicate effectively.
  • Emergency position: must report to work under all emergency conditions as determined by management.
