The primary purpose and function of the Veterinary Technician is to support veterinarians in teaching veterinary students clinical skills including technical skills and animal care.

• Teach veterinary students various clinical skills and assist with teaching more complex skills; collaborate with the Director of Clinical Skills Lab and other technicians to teach courses.
• Organize laboratories and order supplies; maintain and care for laboratory equipment and instruments; regularly clean and stock work areas.
• Create and demonstrate clinical skills models; coordinate the professional skills communication class with the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.
• Assist with clinical research projects; maintain accurate records; work with multiple investigators; order and maintain supplies for research projects.
• Participate in daily chores and other tasks as assigned.
• Provide animal care including daily monitoring of health, administering treatments, feeding, and maintaining living spaces.

• Familiar with basic clinical skills for all four species, including blood collection, catheter insertion, and administration of medications.
• Familiar with basic anesthetic techniques including intubation and maintenance.
• Surgical assistance:
  Instruments, sterile technique, surgical scrubbing (patient and surgeon).
• Euthanasia.

• Lift 50 lb.
• Sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
• Manual dexterity for handling small or large equipment.
• Wear protective clothing as required.
• Occasional driving to perform job tasks.

• Background investigation and, if applicable, a satisfactory credit check may be required.
• Pre-employment drug test for positions with high-risk responsibilities, if applicable.
• Other background checks as described by the university policies.
