Operations Manager
Position Summary
The feed mill manager of the Poultry Research & Education Center Feed Mill is a new position and would be the primary contact for faculty, staff and graduate students in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to coordinate manufacturing of poultry and swine research diets. This role is instrumental to expanding the facility’s functionality through coordination of renovation, repair, operation and maintenance, ensuring regulatory compliance for food‑producing animals, and maintaining feed‑stuff quality.
Staff supervision, training, scheduling and financial responsibilities—including budgeting for operation, supply procurement and billing to internal clientele—are key components of the position, which reports directly to the department head.
- Oversee feed manufacturing operations, schedule staff, faculty and technicians for daily production.
- Coordinate facility maintenance and renovation to support current and future research needs, working with internal and external vendors.
- Develop, implement and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for safety, quality and regulatory compliance; provide staff training and supervision.
- Handle budgetary activities: procure ingredients and supplies, prepare billing to primary investigators, and maintain adherence to financial plans.
- Ensure site safety compliance and regulatory oversight for a feed manufacturing facility dedicated to food‑producing animals.
- Support animal husbandry and welfare duties on a rotational basis, including daily bird checks and maintenance of environmental, feed and watering systems.
- Thorough knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques of livestock and poultry diets as related to institutional needs.
- In-depth understanding of feed manufacturing processes and equipment maintenance.
- Ability to plan and direct large‑scale manufacturing activities and lead both skilled and unskilled employees safely.
- Proficiency in record keeping, budgeting, SOP development, and staff training.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience.
Physical DemandsLifting 50 or more pounds. Driving as needed to perform job duties.
Other Work‑Related InformationSchedule:
Mon – Fri 7 am – 3:30 pm with some weekends, holidays and on‑call responsibilities.
Retirement Plan: TRS or ORP.
