Position Summary

The primary purpose and function of the Licensed Veterinary Technician is to support veterinarians in ensuring quality veterinary care, advocating for pets, and educating clients. For Anesthesia, the LVT assists the senior veterinary and veterinary technician students with anesthetic management for a variety of surgical and diagnostic procedures. Performing and teaching competent catheter (venous, arterial, urinary) placement, regional anesthetic nerve blocks, and intubation skills in a variety of species.

Ensuring the successful recovery of post anesthesia patients. Accurate maintenance of controlled drug log and anesthesia patient records. Maintenance and care of anesthesia related equipment. Stocking and maintenance of assigned crash cart.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the senior veterinary and veterinary technician students with anesthetic management for a variety of surgical and diagnostic procedures with both large and small animal.
  • Use a variety of anesthetic and pain management agents.
  • Perform and teach competent catheter (venous, arterial, urinary) placement, regional anesthetic nerve blocks, and intubation skills in a variety of species.
  • Ensure the successful recovery of post anesthesia patients.
  • Accurate maintenance of controlled drug log and anesthesia patient records.
  • Appropriate and legal handling of controlled substances.
  • Ensure the proper charges for anesthesia cases, as well as submit and check lab work and imaging results through the hospital computer system.
  • Emergency/after hours duty is needed on a rotating basis.
  • Collection of blood, urine by expression, cystocentesis or catheterization.
  • Collection and preparation of tissue, cellular, or microbiological samples by skin scraping and impressions.
  • Routine laboratory test procedures.
  • Radiology including settings, positioning, processing, and safety.
  • Intravenous and arterial catheterization.
  • Administration and application of treatments, drugs, fluids, medications, and immunological agents by oral, parenteral, and injectable routes.
  • Maintenance and care of anesthesia related equipment.
  • Stocking, cleaning, and maintenance of the anesthesia prep area, crash carts, and ORs.
Qualifications
  • Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2‑year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician with experience in a surgery‑based hospital setting.
  • Licensed as a Veterinary Technician in the state of Georgia.
  • Basic knowledge of the pharmacological effects of a variety of anesthetic and pain management agents.
  • Knowledge and familiarity of capnography, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure management for anesthetized patients in a variety of large and small animals/species.
  • Experience with fast‑paced environments, excellent customer service, confidentiality, teaching openness, and stakeholder consultation.
Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions, deal with problems with concrete variables and draw appropriate/accurate conclusions.
  • Sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
  • Deal with stressful situations.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
  • Wear all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles, etc.
  • Work for long periods of time with arms extended.
