Veterinary Assistant II – Field Services/Theriogenology

8‑hour shifts, Monday‑Friday, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.; may be required to work holidays or weekends. Advertised salary: $16.84 per hour.

Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Field Services/Theriogenology Veterinary Assistant is to assist the theriogenology and Field Services department with daily in‑house and on‑site appointments, maintain and stock equipment for theriogenology services, and assist with record keeping and charges. The assistant handles and restrains large animals (horses, cows, sheep, pigs, goats, camelids) and participates in lameness exams, procedures, standing surgeries, radiology, neuro exams, and stallion collection.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Assist LVTs, clinicians, students, and client support staff with patient care and general housekeeping.
  • Stock supplies, maintain cleanliness of housing and clinical areas, and use sanitation equipment.
  • Transport animals and samples, assist with anesthetic induction and recovery, and use Vet View/Cubex for medical records.
  • Handle and restrain various large animal species, including horses in all temperaments.
  • Administer medications, monitor vital signs, obtain bodily fluid samples.
  • Communicate professionally with owners regarding theriogenology appointments and procedures.
  • Drive UGA‑owned vehicles to and from field appointments as needed.
  • Check and replenish liquid nitrogen and semen storage tanks, and maintain inventory lists.
  • Fill, use, and clean artificial vagina, breeding phantom, and other reproductive equipment.
  • Ship semen via Fed‑Ex or airline and assist with freezing/sealing procedures.
  • Set up and utilize ultrasound and cattle chutes.
  • Maintain bull breeding soundness exam supplies and equipment.
  • Enter lab work, charges, and patient records into Vet View or other systems.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience handling large animals, primarily horses.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and restrain various species of animals.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment while providing excellent customer service and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of general animal anatomy and ability to recognize signs of distress.
Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Sit, stoop, and bend intermittently on hard floors.
  • Manual dexterity for working with delicate equipment.
  • Wear protective gear (mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles).
  • Work extended periods with arms extended.
  • Work in environments with high levels of animal sounds, bodily fluids, and open wound management.
  • Drive as needed.
