Minimum QualificationsRequires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2‑year degree, or a professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred QualificationsPrior experience with mouse work is highly preferred.
Position SummaryThis position will serve as the research technician in the lab of Dr. Arthi Kanthasamy in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. The lab conducts NIH‑funded basic research on neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory mechanisms in cell culture and preclinical mouse models of Parkinson’s disease and related neurological disorders, and focuses on biomarker discovery in human samples and testing novel therapeutics in preclinical animal models.
Responsibilities- Organize and assist in the implementation of research projects, including data collection and project management.
- Read and develop a basic understanding of research project protocols.
- Maintain accurate records on every aspect of research projects.
- Properly dispose of biohazard waste.
- Perform inventory and provide basic maintenance and ordering of research supplies and equipment.
- Assist graduate students and other senior research personnel with their experiments.
- Perform multiple behavioral, neurobiochemical, and histological assays.
- Analyze and validate data and support experimental design and execution.
- Communicate professionally with supervisor, graduate students, and research personnel regarding workflow, time limitations, and project status.
- Write reports and present findings to colleagues and supervisor.
- Maintain a positive attitude and calm demeanor during stressful situations.
- Accept constructive criticism.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Experience, or willingness, to perform research.
- Effective communication skills, with ability to maintain accurate documentation and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a sometimes‑stressful environment.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills while carrying out instructions.
- Maintain a high degree of confidentiality while providing consultation to a variety of stakeholders.
- Basic computer knowledge in MS Word and Excel.
- Lift up to 30 pounds.
- Deal with stressful situations.
- Manual dexterity to work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
- Wear all protective gear, including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, and safety goggles.
- Work for long periods of time with arms extended.
