Position Summary: This position is for a research support technician who will assist in the collection and identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates from stream ecosystems and aquatic plant density surveys at a constructed wetland at the Savannah River Site. We anticipate this temporary technician position to last from August 25th through December 2025 pending funding.
Duties / Responsibilities
- Preparation and field work to collect macroinvertebrates, estimate aquatic plant density including labeling sample bottles, ordering supplies, organizing field equipment, walking to field sites, wading through streams, collecting and preserving macroinvertebrates. (40%)
- Identification of macroinvertebrates including being given instruction on identification, microscopy, filling out and organizing data sheets. (57%)
- Basic management of the supervisor’s laboratory (order and organize supplies, adherence to safety protocols, basic equipment maintenance). (3%)
Physical Demands: Field work that includes hot and humid conditions with biting insects in the summer and cold temperatures in the winter. Tasks will include wading into streams and wetlands, carrying equipment to the field sites (distance can be around a mile), lifting heavy objects (>50 lbs), and viewing macroinvertebrates through a microscope at the lab bench for long periods.
