The Plant Nematology Lab Assistant supports laboratory and greenhouse research related to plant diseases and their causal agents. Responsibilities include planting, processing samples for nematode resistance screening, maintaining the lab, and caring for plants in greenhouses and growth chambers under faculty, lab‑manager, post‑doc, and graduate‑student supervision.
Responsibilities- Assist with planting and processing germplasm for nematode resistance screening (labeling tags, packaging and germination of seed, harvesting seed, filling pots with soil, soaking and processing roots for analysis).
Time allocation: 40% - Assist with lab maintenance and chores (washing and sterilizing pots, stocking supplies, cleaning the lab, disposing of plant material).
- Assist with plant and/or pathogen care by watering plants in greenhouses and growth chambers, including brief periods on a rotational basis during assigned weekends.
Time allocation: 10% - Assist with prepping, steaming, and disposal of soil.
- Prior experience working with plants is desirable but not required.
- Interest in crop/plant science, plant pathology, plant biology, soil science, or a related field.
- Self‑motivated, organized, detail‑oriented, enthusiastic, eager to learn, reliable, and efficient in time management.
- Excellent verbal communication skills are required.
Must be available for multi‑hour blocks Monday‑Friday and rotational weekends. Must be able to stand for prolonged periods and work in warmer greenhouse temperatures while performing technical tasks.
