Provide exemplary leadership and support the overall operation of the Sheriff’s Department at the unit, field or jail level. Assist the Lieutenant and/or Captain in daily operations, leading and coordinating assigned personnel, enforcing laws and ordinances, building trust internally and with the community, planning, staffing, directing, coordinating, and reporting. Lead investigations, supervise inmate and court security staff, train personnel, and develop policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise and evaluate assigned staff, handle employee concerns, direct work assignments and conduct performance appraisals.
- Check time cards, daily activity logs, shift briefings, and inspect weapons, equipment, uniforms, and personal appearance.
- Assist with court security, serve civil and criminal warrants, manage booking procedures, and approve all reports.
- Support investigations of altercations, thefts, and inmate rule violations; provide courtroom security.
- Extradite and transport inmates; coordinate with relief supervisors and other agencies.
- Respond to domestic disputes, emergencies, and restore order, safety and security.
- Assist in training new officers, develop and implement comprehensive training programs, and maintain training records.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment, perform inmate counts, contraband checks, and key control.
- Investigate high‑liability cases, research case law, and develop operating policies and manuals.
- Provide instruction at the Regional Police Academy and train personnel on the department firing range.
- Serve pick‑up orders and transport mental patients.
- Assist in the supervision and shakedown of inmates, including feeding and supervising visitations.
- Issue traffic citations and testify in court.
- Assist in advancing staff to meet operational objectives and evaluate performance.
- Prepare class materials, lesson plans, and instructional aids.
- Maintain files of training records and evaluate program effectiveness.
- Assist other agencies with domestic calls and traffic control.
- Develop recommendations for policies and procedures and maintain the department’s library of law enforcement information.
- High School Diploma or equivalent with four (4) years of POST‑certified law enforcement, corrections, or related experience.
- Current certifications as required by the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act / Peace Officer's Standards and Training Act.
- Valid driver’s license and preferred experience with vehicle operation.
- Prior experience investigating gangs (preferred).
- Associate’s degree or higher preferred.
- Supervisory experience (preferred).
8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday‑Friday; occasional after‑hours, overtime, holidays, and religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required; work must be performed cooperatively with others. Vehicle operation responsibilities include safety, readiness, and adherence to the department’s driving policy.
