About University HousingUniversity Housing is part of the Division of Student Affairs, encompassing nearly 2.8 million square feet of facilities and serving more than 9,000 students. The department employs 220 full‑time staff, 21 graduate assistants, and 565 undergraduate student workers, operating on a $59 million budget derived solely from student housing fees.

- Two or more years of security, police, or military experience.
- Prior work experience on a university campus.
The security guard protects persons and property in and around all residential communities housing more than 9,000 residents. Responsibilities include monitoring for security and safety hazards, conducting patrols, interacting professionally with students and staff, maintaining accurate paperwork, and providing coverage during holidays, breaks, and special events.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Write clear and accurate shift and incident reports.
- Remain calm and confident in stressful situations while balancing customer service needs.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Work effectively with staff from various campus departments.
- Learn security systems, including body camera operation.
- Develop knowledge of residential buildings and surrounding grounds.
- Walk 5 miles or more during a shift.
- Visual acuity required to detect security or safety issues during nighttime hours.
- Verbal communication and audible listening in stressful situations.
- Safely operate a UGA state vehicle as necessary.
- Occasional outdoor work in hot or cold weather conditions.
- Conduct foot patrols around assigned residential communities, checking buildings and grounds.
- Watch for and report life safety issues such as suspicious persons, fire hazards, and security door irregularities.
- Examine doors, windows, and gates to ensure security integrity.
- Provide walking escorts for students and vehicle transport for housing staff upon request.
- Provide coverage during University holidays, breaks, and special events.
- Respond to incidents, interacting respectfully with students, Housing staff, and campus partners.
- Wear and activate body‑worn cameras during incidents, escorts, or vehicle transports.
- Address, report, and document policy violations or legal violations.
- Collaborate with UGA Police when present in residence halls.
- Complete required training sessions, some of which may occur off‑shift.
- Maintain and submit accurate, detailed paperwork and reports.
- Perform monthly inspections of lifesaving equipment in all traditional residence halls.
- Perform other duties consistent with the position’s purpose as assigned.
Yes, driving a state vehicle is a responsibility. This position is a position of trust with direct interaction with minors under 18 and access to sensitive information; it does not have financial resources or P‑Card duties.
