Position SummaryThis position has expert-level knowledge and skills for the operation and maintenance of the UGA campus building chilled water production system. The system includes chillers, cooling towers, chilled water and condenser water pumps, distribution piping, control valves, actuators, and the systems automation and microprocessor controls. This position works independently to monitor, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair the system at district plants and various campus buildings.
Knowledge,Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Expert-level knowledge and skills in operation, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of building chilled water and hot water production systems and components. Responsibilities include checks and corrective actions to ensure systems deliver chilled water per engineering specifications. Ability to diagnose and solve a wide range of operational issues arising from mechanical, electrical, and automated controls, including the following:
- Chiller and cooling tower operation, troubleshooting, and repair
- Chilled water and condenser water treatment
- Troubleshoot and install chiller sensors, boards and relays
- Troubleshooting, testing and assisting in commissioning of new building chilled water systems
- Building Automation System (BAS) chilled water production control
- Reading and interpreting mechanical plans and wiring diagrams
- Analyzing and correcting communication issues
- Analyzing and measuring fluid and air dynamics
- Adherence to EPA refrigerant handling guidelines and ability to obtain universal refrigerant license
- Lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, working overhead, climbing stairs, using ladders (regular and extended) during an 8-hour shift
- Lift up to 75 lbs during a shift
- Perform checks and take corrective action to ensure chilled water production systems and cooling towers operate per designed flow, volume and temperature requirements.
- Install, maintain, and repair building chilled water mechanical components such as rods, condensers and evaporators.
- Diagnose and solve operational issues from mechanical, electrical, and automated controls (sensors, boards, starters, relays, actuators).
- Troubleshoot, test and assist in commissioning of new building chilled water production systems.
- Assist and support other duties as assigned by the Building HVAC Shop Manager.
