Purpose of the Job

The purpose of this job is to supervise Transit Vehicle Operators in the performance of their duties. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, enforcing operating policies, ensuring safety measures are met, performing dispatch duties, and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Work Schedule

Flexible schedule options—up to 28 hours per week, weekend availability required. Athens Transit is open Monday‑Friday 6:00 am‑10:00 pm, Saturday & Sunday 6:30 am‑7:00 pm. May be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others.

Emergency Position

This position is designated as an emergency position that requires attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions. Examples include inclement weather, utility failure, fire or other forced evacuations, or as determined by the Manager.

Minimum Training & Experience Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent with three years of management or transit operations experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • One year of supervisory experience required.
  • Associate’s degree in business, management, or related discipline preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License.
Essential Duties, Responsibilities
  • Assist with supervising and evaluating assigned staff, handle all employee concerns, direct work assignments, counsel and discipline employees, and complete employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinate daily assignment of bus routes and charters; coordinate A.M./P.M. equipment and operator assignments.
  • Conduct ride checks and time checks to ensure policies, procedures, and standards are met by Operators.
  • Ensure all state, federal, and local safety regulations and operating procedures are followed.
  • Perform Operations Division employee training.
  • Monitor radio traffic on fixed route and demand response service.
  • Investigate all accidents and recommend actions to be taken.
  • Identify locations, initiate installation, and monitor condition of all bus stops and shelters.
  • Assist buses that are behind schedule; initiate corrective action.
  • Assist in development of service schedules, prepare manifests, and route descriptions for review.
  • Assists in preparation of public information such as time tables, route manifests, transfers, notices, and route descriptions; maintain stock at distribution sites and transit points.
  • Maintain stock of operator supplies and uniforms; process requests for purchase requisitions.
  • Receive customer service reports from the public; investigate reported operator actions and take appropriate actions.
  • Assist in developing and/or conducting safety programs.
  • Pull cash box and probe farebox data from each bus and/or count revenues daily; make deposits as required.
  • Review and recommend new or modified bus routes to the Superintendent of Operations.
  • Assist in developing the departmental budget; compare anticipated service levels with available personnel and equipment.
  • Review completed daily assignment sheets, charter orders and contract work orders for completeness and accuracy.
  • Operate a bus as needed.
  • Collect pass revenue at pass sales locations; make deposits as needed.
  • Assist demand response vans in passenger pickups.
  • Transport passengers who have missed their bus, as necessary.
  • Answer telephone for public service information.
  • Assist the dispatcher as needed.
  • Monitor disposition of articles found within buses.
  • Represent Athens Transit on committees; serve as a member of the Accident Review Committee, review and rule on accidents involving Transit employees.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
