Job Responsibilities
Job Function: Under the direct supervision of the Lead Custodian (where applicable) and the indirect supervision of the Principal/Vice‑Principal or designate, the Custodian I: Responsible for cleaning, minor maintenance and security of the school.
Direction Received/Independent Action:
Follows Board procedures for breakdowns, repairs and supply needs, cleaning duties, sanitary practices, chemical handling, WHMIS regulations and the Fire Marshal’s Act.
Receives individual tasks and monthly priority assignments from the Superintendent of Plant Operations and Maintenance and, on occasion, from the Principal/Vice‑Principal or designate.
Works independently: plans daily schedule, prioritizes tasks, rescues when new cleaning requirements arise, selects appropriate cleaning agents and tools.
Receives guidance on new or revised regulations and policies from supervisor; on‑the‑job training provided when needed.
Supervision/Direction of Other Employees:
Does not normally supervise other employees but provides orientation and instruction to new employees.
Assigns tasks to new employees and verifies satisfactory completion.
Follows safe work practices to avoid injury to students, co‑workers and other facility users.
Major Activity A:
Cleaning While School Is In Session
Unlocks school doors in the morning, checks furnace and security systems, reports problems, and keeps keys secure.
Stocks cleaning cart with fluids, paper products, rags and utensils; advises supervisor of low stock.
Sweeps floors, tidies furnishings, picks up litter, empties waste baskets, and stacks garbage bags for removal.
Ensures windows are closed and doors locked after cleaning; unlocks doors for authorized personnel when needed.
Daily cleans doors, windows, entrances, toilets, sinks, fountains, table tops, desks, glue, and filing cabinets; vacuums carpets.
Dust mops tile and cement floors; wet mops hallways; replenishes tissues, towels and soap in dispensers.
Clean mirrors, walls and graffiti; weekly vacuums offices, computer room, library and board room; cleans sinks, blackboards and chalk ledges.
Disinfects toilets, urinals and garbage cans with chemical disinfectant.
Cuts grass in the yard, shovels snow from entrances, walks and hooks flag; cleans after special events; supervises community users after hours.
Notifies supervisor of needed supplies and maintains inventory if one‑custodian.
Protects confidential material; ensures building security, investigates unauthorized activity and reports to supervisor and authorities.
Maintains fire extinguishers and emergency lighting systems.
Major Activity B:
Facility Maintenance
Notes and reports deficiencies and repair needs; performs minor plumbing repairs; cleans up leaks and broken glass.
Replaces burnt‑out bulbs and installs pencil sharpeners; provides minor general repairs such as tightening screws and hammering nails; performs minor maintenance, paints, touch‑ups on furnishings and fixtures.
Major Activity C:
Custodial and Maintenance Duties During School Breaks
Washes walls, light fixtures, and windows; scrubs and removes graffiti, gum, glue, tape, stickers and labels.
Washes and cleans furnishings; clears classrooms for stripping and waxing; replaces furnishings and re‑sets classrooms after waxing.
Uses long‑handled tools and operates vacuums and scrubbing machines; performs minor service such as emptying dust bags; inspects wear and damage.
Dusts all blinds; thoroughly vacuums and shampoos carpets; launders dust mops.
Performs any other duties assigned by the Lead Custodian or Principal/Vice‑Principal or designate.
