Description Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or highest level of degree required
- BLS required effective 1/1/2021; existing incumbents with HSAED will be required to renew with BLS. All new hires are required to have BLS within 6 months of hire or transfer.
The Laboratory Assistant performs support duties for efficient laboratory operations. This position assists with the collection, handling and preparation of specimens for laboratory testing as directed and according to established departmental standards. Duties include verification and labeling of specimens, handling and transporting specimens, preparation of slides, and maintaining necessary supplies. This role may include the collection of blood according to established procedures in a manner that supports quality patient care.
This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
- High School Diploma or highest level of degree required. Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field strongly preferred for Histology and Cytology positions.
- ASCP/Phlebotomy certification or registry-eligible preferred. Previous hospital phlebotomy experience may be substituted for certification.
- Incumbents working in a phlebotomist role must maintain 12 CEUs annually.

- Prior experience preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology required; knowledge of laboratory information system utilization must be acquired after 3 months of on‑job training.
- Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within the position will be trained appropriately and then must demonstrate skill within 30‑60 days from date of hire.
- Must have the ability to distinguish colors.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform the department‑specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
- Strict compliance with laboratory Fraud and Abuse policies and requirements is an employment condition.
- Potential for exposure to the hazards and risks of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
- This position demands increased amounts of standing, bending, and manual manipulation, as well as some light lifting.

- Core competencies will be assessed primarily in relation to the following patient population(s) served (with the exception of newborns): all diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.
This position reports to the Laboratory Supervisor.
