Overview
Under the supervision of a registered nurse, the Nurse Extern will strengthen their clinical knowledge and skills while performing direct and indirect patient care. This position prepares the Nurse Extern in the transition from student nurse to professional nurse.
The Nurse Extern supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.
QualificationsEDUCATION: Currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing to preparing candidates for registered nurse licensure. Students of diploma and two-year programs must have completed at least two clinical nursing semesters with a minimum grade of "C". Baccalaureate students must have completed all junior-level courses with a minimum grade of "C". Students must submit a skills checklist completed by their school of nursing to validate academic and clinical standing.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Current American Heart Association basic life support (BLS) for the healthcare provider certification required upon hire or transfer.
EXPERIENCE: Two semesters of clinical student nursing experience. Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and collaborate with other team members; ability to be flexible, set priorities, solve problems and use judgment in difficult situations.
Performance ExpectationsDemonstrates competencies on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.
Work EnvironmentGeneral hospital exposure potential hazards and risks, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances and potential injury.
Reaching, stooping, kneeling and crouching approximately 25% of a workday; visual and physical ability required to work at a computer terminal; standing and walking approximately 75% of a workday; lifting approximately 50 --100 pounds frequently, with assistance occasionally; physical abilities required to push, pull or transport equipment and patients.

Reporting RelationshipThis position reports to the hospital unit nursing leader.
