Position: Youth Engagement Support Staff (On-Call Per-diem) Day Shift

Overview

Youth Engagement Support Staff (On-Call Per-diem) Day Shift at Covenant House New Jersey. The role provides youth engagement support that is strength-based, trauma-informed, and harm reduction focused. The YESS will model the organization s mission of providing absolute respect and unconditional love to all young people and will work within a multi-disciplinary team to create a safe, inclusive environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide unconditional positive regard to young people regardless of their behavior.
  • Support Case Management Services with the goal of developing positive relationships with young people through the Case Management System, including:
  • Welcome young people to the program, ensure they feel comfortable and safe, explain the program structure, opportunities for engagement, and access to supplies.
  • Build a supportive relationship with youth that encourages them to find their voice and connect them to opportunities, experiences, and resources.
  • Support identified Success Plan goals with each young person; monitor progress toward self-identified goals and coach youth to plan, implement, and follow through with tasks.
  • Motivate youth to explore and improve wellness, education and employment, financial literacy, and social navigation goals relevant to their success plan.
  • Monitor youth while taking medications and document Medication Logs.
  • Engage with youth in daily House Activities, including assisting with chores, dining, gym, transportation, and movement throughout the day.
  • Explore and participate with youth in outside activities (e.g., trips, park visits, college tours) to enrich their time with CHNJ.
  • Provide crisis de-escalation and intervention as necessary according to training and best practices.
  • Document intake, orientation, and transitions into ETO, HMIS, and case files; document daily progress notes in youth records and related logs (HMIS, ETO, Medication Logs, and House Activity Logs).
  • Facilitate assigned youth group activities that support the five resiliency objectives:
    Wellness, Social Navigation, Financial Literacy, Education and Employment, on a regular basis.
  • Complete duties assigned by the supervisor to meet the needs of young people while adhering to the daily program schedule. Make copies of forms or documents as needed. Prepare welcome kits and manage supplies.
  • Perform housekeeping tasks as assigned (e.g., sorting donations, organizing storage, laundry for youth linens, cleaning and preparing spaces for intakes).
  • Maintain youth common areas and ensure spaces meet cleanliness standards.
  • Count medication nightly and document; notify supervisor of any inaccuracies.
  • Rotate youth files according to the annual system. Attend supervision, meetings, and professional development training as assigned. Respond to agency communications (emails, calendar invites).
  • Cover the front desk and other areas of the building as assigned; assist with transportation of youth in agency vehicles as needed.
  • Utilize agency resources appropriately and assist with fundraising events as needed outside the normal schedule.
Shift, Compensation, and Experience

Shift: 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM (on-call per-diems)

Hourly Rate: $18.71/hr

Experience and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, social work, or related field preferred.
  • Preferred experience with young people ages 18–24 experiencing homelessness or human trafficking; knowledge of public benefits and community resources in NJ.
  • Strong self-starting and teamwork abilities; ability to build positive rapport with young people; knowledge of adolescent development; effective written and verbal communication. Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with an insurable record.
