The City of Attleboro seeks a Lab Manager for the Water Department who, under the direction of the Water Superintendent, performs complex and responsible duties requiring the exercise of independent judgment in the operation and maintenance of the water treatment laboratory. Responsible for maintaining regulatory laboratory certification in appropriate disciplines.
Responsibilities- Perform laboratory tests of raw and finished water.
- Analyze test results to assess water quality and compare findings against environmental regulations and industry standards.
- Assist in water treatment processes and recommend or implement corrective actions when contaminants exceed safe levels.
- Stay current with advances in water testing and treatment technologies.
- Contribute to studies related to water quality trends, climate impacts or emerging contaminants.
- Prepare reports to regulatory agencies on test results and plant conditions.
- Confere with other city departments and state and federal agencies and the general public regarding departmental issues.
- Monitor laboratory annual budget and assist in solicitation for contract laboratory as needed.
- Oversee contract laboratory, maintain inventories of necessary supplies, requisition supplies and maintain lab SOPs and Q.A. plan.
- Monitor pH levels at various locations; perform process control tests such as jar tests for chemical addition relative to specific water treatment processes.
- Perform analyses for contaminants and bacteriological examination for floc, coagulate, metals, turbidity and total fecal coliform.
- Perform daily calibration, routine maintenance and repair of laboratory instrumentation.
- Perform related work as required.
Requires a Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or natural sciences; at least five years’ experience in a lab; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Water treatment experience preferred. Comprehensive knowledge of water treatment and practical knowledge of biology and chemistry. Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal drinking water regulations. Knowledge of laboratory procedures and safety. Ability to operate basic laboratory equipment and instruments.
Knowledge of mathematics fundamentals. Good organizational management and supervisory skills.
