Job Description
The Lead Weight Engineer manages the overall weight status for one or more vehicle programs from early concept approval through production launch. This role provides strategic leadership to cross‑functional teams to ensure weight‑related functional objectives are met, balancing fuel economy, performance, emissions, and capability. Key responsibilities include setting competitive weight targets, guiding program development, and supporting global alignment.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and manage top‑down and bottom‑up weight targets across vehicle programs.
- Lead weight strategy development with BICEEP and Advanced Program teams.
- Conduct competitive benchmarking and capability studies (GVWR, GAWR, payload, towing).
- Collaborate with Program, EMAT, Brand & Planning teams to support fuel economy simulations and EPA option weight budgets.
- Create and distribute monthly weight and capability scorecards.
- Provide regular weight status updates to engineering teams and leadership.
- Validate prototype and production vehicle weights; address spring and ride height issues.
- Coordinate component weighing and part audits at suppliers and assembly plants.
- Monitor and audit FE Label compliance and actual take rates for EPA options.
- Lead Bill of Materials validation to improve weight reporting accuracy.
- Support global process alignment and contribute to regional/global standards.
- Mentor junior engineers and foster team development.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field or equivalent.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant automotive product development experience.
- Knowledge of the overall program development life cycle.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Ability to create and deliver presentation material to groups of varying sizes.
- Experience analyzing data and formulating meaningful conclusions and recommendations.
- Master's degree in Engineering or related field.
- Experience with automotive competitive benchmarking or weight management.
- Knowledge of vehicle demand energy analysis or fuel economy testing.
- Familiarity with FCA engineering tools such as EBOM, CN, Team Center, STV, FastCar2, A2
Mac, simulation tools, etc.
