Operations Manager, Quality Engineering
Position Summary
Provide oversight and coordination of activities within the Technology Center, which includes component, product and systems testing. Responsible for managing and leading a team in conducting tests and specialty projects related to automotive product validation. Supervise highly technical work involving the design and/or fabrication of special test devices and equipment. Responsible for efficient utilization of labor, material, and equipment, and ensuring a cost competitive structure and process for the lab with a focus on maximizing equipment utilization.
Responsibilitiesof the Position
- Train and develop technology center staff and manage the performance of the team.
- Drive standardization of test methods, set‑up, procedures and reporting.
- Manage the operation of the lab to realize efficient, reliable, impartial and accurate testing and analysis.
- Engage, collaborate, and coordinate with the internal Global Lab Network.
- Conduct benchmarking activities to compare test costs against regional and global alternatives.
- Identify opportunities to optimize lab performance and efficiency and implement improvements to maximize equipment utilization.
- Ensure on‑time completion of testing in accordance with the test schedule.
- Develop KPI metrics to support business success.
- Establish and manage the annual budget required to support company financial plans, monitor and react to non‑conformities.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 17025 laboratory quality standard and corporate IATF 16949 requirements.
- Support root‑cause analysis of test failures relative to the influence of test set‑up, method, and procedure.
- Maintain good employee relations with technology center staff and internal/external customers.
- Ensure departmental safety compliance to ISO 14001 and 45001.
- Knowledge of software and tools to effectively manage coordination and on‑time completion of testing across multiple pieces of equipment in a laboratory.
- Knowledge of laboratory accreditation requirements and safety standards.
- Experience with testing fluid transportation assemblies (Brake, Fuel, Coolant, AC) and fuel tank & delivery systems preferred.
- Demonstrated experience managing employee performance and team output, effectively working with others and motivating a large team.
- Ability to read engineering drawings/documents and a working knowledge of engineering math.
- High level of analytical ability where problems are complex.
- Proficient computer skills and abilities with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering (or related field) required.
- Minimum of 10 years related experience in an automotive test lab environment.
- Management/supervisory experience required.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Ability to work at a personal computer for extended periods.
- Occasionally lifts and carries up to 50 pounds.
- Frequently spends time standing, walking, lifting and bending.
- Works within an automotive component manufacturing laboratory setting and may be exposed to heat, cold and fumes/chemicals.
