Detroit Riverside Capital is a small but mighty real estate development firm based in Auburn Hills, Michigan. We specialize in multifamily and mixed‑use development, bringing thoughtful, modern projects to life throughout Southeast Michigan. As we continue to grow, we are looking for a detail‑driven and proactive Financial Controller to join our team and support the financial operations that keep our projects running smoothly.
PositionSummary
The Financial Controller will oversee all day‑to‑day accounting functions, ensure accurate financial reporting, and maintain strong internal controls across the organization. This role supports multiple active development projects and collaborates closely with leadership, lenders, and external partners. The ideal candidate is organized, analytical, and comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment where priorities shift as projects evolve.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain and reconcile all company and project‑level bank accounts.
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, including vendor invoicing and payment processing.
- Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger reconciliations.
- Prepare internal financial statements, project cost reports, and cash‑flow summaries.
- Support budgeting and forecasting for both corporate operations and development projects.
- Manage construction draw processes, including assembling pay applications, verifying lien waivers, and coordinating with contractors.
- Track project budgets vs. actuals and report variances to leadership.
- Maintain detailed job cost accounting, including coding and allocating expenses appropriately.
- Coordinate with lenders for draw submissions, financial reporting, and audits.
- Maintain vendor records, W9s, and contract documentation.
- Assist with reviewing vendor invoices for accuracy and contract compliance.
- Support annual 1099 preparation and distribution.
- Create and maintain accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes and improve efficiency.
- Assist with implementation and optimization of software tools (e.g., Quick Books, Excel models).
- Work closely with the leadership team on ad‑hoc financial analysis and reporting needs.
- Assist in preparing materials for lenders, investors, and external partners.
- Support year‑end financial review/tax preparation with CPA partners.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required).
- 3–7+ years of accounting experience, preferably in real estate development, construction, or property management.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and construction/job‑cost accounting.
- Proficiency with Quick Books, or similar accounting/project management software.
- Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large datasets.
- Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a small team.
