Auburn University Athletics is seeking candidates for Assistant Academic Counselor (Athletics). Working within Student‑Athlete Support Services (SASS), the primary focus of this position is to gain experience providing comprehensive academic support to collegiate level student‑athletes. This position will work closely with Academic Counselors to track, monitor, forecast, and communicate regarding the academic progress of student‑athletes for assigned sports. This is a term position that is expected to run from July 2023 to May 2024.
The successful candidate will serve as part of a comprehensive team in Student‑Athlete Support Services. SASS promotes, assists, and provides counsel to Auburn University student‑athletes in the areas of academics and eligibility.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Track, monitor, and forecast the academic progress of assigned student‑athletes and provide comprehensive academic counseling related to course load/scheduling, degree selection, etc.
- Communicate regularly with Athletic Academic Counselor and Learning Specialist specific to the academic performance of assigned student‑athletes.
- Collect data and prepare academic reports (e.g., grade reports, accountability, etc.).
- Assist in tracking student‑athletes’ eligibility and progress toward degree requirements in accordance with University, SEC, and NCAA guidelines.
- Schedule/monitor use of academic services and resources including tutoring, strategist, study table, etc.; suggest data‑driven interventions.
- Participate in Athletic Certification meetings with Academic Counselor, Associate Registrar for Athletic Compliance in the Office of the Registrar, the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR), and Athletics Compliance to review and discuss academic data used to certify the NCAA academic eligibility of each student‑athlete.
- Attend beginning of semester academic meetings and participate in coaches’ meetings for assigned teams.
- Meet with prospective student‑athletes and families as requested alongside SASS staff.
- Participate in professional development and orientation sessions specific to role of Academic Counselors and Learning Specialist to enhance and develop the necessary skills to best prepare for full‑time career.
- Create training materials and tutorials for part‑time staff members and lead training sessions throughout the semester.
- Assist with other administrative functions as assigned (e.g., summer bridge, book scholarship, scholarships/awards).
- Comply with all NCAA, SEC, and Auburn University rules, regulations, and policies.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Education, Counseling, Sports Management or Administration, or a related field.
Desired QualificationsMaster’s degree in disciplines listed above;
Previous experience with academics in an NCAA Division I athletics program;
Working knowledge of NCAA and SEC rules and regulations, specifically those pertaining to eligibility;
Possess attention to detail and ability to keep accurate records;
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
Ability to interact with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and across a wide range of ages.
Salary Range $21.00/hour
Work Hours Monday - Friday, hours will vary
