The Sr. Lead Weight Engineer will be a key member of the weight team, leveraging extensive knowledge and subject matter expertise to drive program development and mentorship of less experienced team members.
Daily activities for the Sr. Lead Weight Engineer include but are not limited to the following:
- Train, lead, and mentor junior team members
- Support the creation of training materials.
- Participate in the development of regional and global standards.
- Conduct competitive weight benchmarking.
- Establish initial top-down weight estimates for key model variants.
- Collaborate with Brand & Planning to develop EPA option weight budgets.
- Develop capability and weight scorecards (GVWR, GAWR, Payload, Towing, etc.)
- Identify and coordinate approval for weight reduction opportunities with cross-functional teams.
- Lead Bill of Materials validation to improve the fidelity of weight status roll-ups (based on EBOM & PDB)
- Coordinate component weighing at suppliers and assembly plants.
- Validate prototype vehicle weights, address spring and ride height issues at assembly plants.
- Monitor weight status of prototype builds from X0 to SOP, validating virtual weight against actual builds.
- Transition weight reporting responsibilities to the production weight reporting team post Standard Operations Procedure (SOP)
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent from an ABET accredited or equivalent program
- 8+ years of Automotive Engineering experience
- Participation in at least two full program life cycles from concept phase through launch
- Strong communication skills, capable of interacting with senior leadership through both written and verbal means
- Proficiency in creating presentation materials and explaining complex concepts to diverse audiences.
- Ability to coach, mentor, and train less experienced Weight Engineers
- Subject matter expertise in all aspects of weight management from early concept through production launch
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Experience analyzing data and formulating meaningful conclusions and recommendations.
- Prior experience with mass properties or development of weight estimates in the automotive or aerospace field
- Knowledge of Vehicle Demand Energy analysis or fuel economy testing
- Prior work experience with Chrysler, FCA, or Stellantis Engineering
- Comfortable challenging others using data to support a position
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence and motivate others
- Ability to develop project plans and work under timing constraints
- Self-motivated, able to work with limited supervision, multi-task, and prioritize workload
- Proficient in conducting analysis and formulating recommendations
- Ability to work in a team, build good working relationships, and gain consensus
