Estimator I/II/III

As an Estimator, you will play a key role in supporting Facilities Management by providing accurate and reliable cost estimates for capital construction projects and repairs to existing building systems. Acting as a subject matter expert, you’ll analyze project requirements, evaluate repair and replacement needs, and deliver cost projections that help guide strategic decisions. This position is ideal for detail‑oriented professionals who enjoy problem‑solving, collaborating with diverse teams, and ensuring projects are completed efficiently and within budget.

Essential

Functions
  • Develop project cost estimates, recommend construction durations, review external estimates, and gather cost data using AU standards and systems. Maintain and advise on AU‑approved estimating systems and databases.
  • Evaluate and advise design documents for constructability, cost control and efficiency, and risk mitigation.
  • Manage and recommend contractor prequalification, bid solicitation, bid market analysis, and post‑bid evaluation. Participate in Pre‑Bid and Post‑Bid meetings as needed. May participate in project buy‑out for maintenance projects.
  • Review and approve construction contract change orders, job order contracts, and related cost adjustments and make recommendations.
  • Lead Construction Market Reporting using current collected and compiled market data on material costs, subcontractor availability, and regional trends. Proactively forecast, advise, and report on potential impacts to AU Capital Projects.
  • Lead cost reporting based on current project costs. Maintain and update project cost data in the AU historical construction cost database.
  • Communicate and collaborate with peer estimators, project managers, and Facilities Management leadership on project cost and schedule issues. Lead and participate in professional development and training.

Minimum Qualifications

Based on experience and education, candidates will be considered for the following levels of Estimator.

Level I
  • Bachelor’s degree in Building Sciences, Engineering, Business, Economics or related field.
Level II
  • Bachelor’s degree in Building Sciences, Engineering, Business, Economics, or related field AND 3 years of experience with construction practices.
Level III
  • Bachelor’s degree in Building Sciences, Engineering, Business, Economics, or related field, AND 7 years of experience with construction practices.
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications Level I
  • Knows and applies fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of particular field of specialization.
Level II
  • Knows and applies advanced concepts, practices, and procedures of particular field of specialization, with awareness of related fields.
Level III
  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization to the completion of difficult assignments.
  • Also possesses knowledge of related fields and areas of operation which affect, or are affected by, own area.
  • Valid driver license in any state.
Desired Qualifications Level III
  • Professional Engineer (PE) upon hire desired, or
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent upon hire desired.
