Job Summary

This position is responsible for managing the operations and maintenance of the water treatment plant, water supply, and water pumping facilities; and ensuring compliance with federal and state drinking water rules and regulations. This position reports to the Principal Utility Engineer.

Essential Job Functions
  • Manages the maintenance and operation of the water treatment plant and water pumping facilities.
  • Oversees and ensures the supply of safe, clean, and reliable drinking water to the City of Auburn in conformance with all applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Performs supervisory and administrative duties including directing work, personnel performance appraisals and discipline, coaching, training and budget planning and implementation.
  • Provides assistance to management concerning water plant maintenance and operational issues.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelors degree or equivalent; five (5) to eight (8) years experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain an Alabama Grade IV license for water treatment.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid drivers license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of water treatment plants, pumping facilities, and related infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal rules, regulations and laws related to the treatment and distribution of drinking water.
  • Knowledge of water sampling and laboratory analysis procedures.
  • Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
  • Knowledge of accounting and budgeting procedures.
  • Knowledge of management and supervisory principles and practices.
  • Skill in the training and supervision of personnel.
  • Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Skill in the use of small office equipment, including calculators, copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
