  • Job Summary

    The Alabama Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit at Auburn University is seeking Mammal Sampling Technicians (8) for a multi-species inventory and conservation project on selected state-owned lands within Alabama. Primary responsibilities include conducting small mammal live trapping using Sherman traps, deploying and retrieving camera traps and Anabat detectors, data entry, memory card management, and maintaining field equipment and vehicles. Candidates must be prepared to work under challenging environmental conditions, including exposure to heat, humidity, wildlife, and insects.

    Essential Functions

    • Conduct small mammal trapping, handling, and processing.
    • Deploy and manage Anabat and camera traps.
    • Perform vegetation sampling, data entry, and database management.
    • Maintain field equipment and vehicles.

    Work vehicles, gas, and housing are provided.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma and valid driver’s license.
    • Motivated with experience in field surveys.
    • Proficient in GPS navigation; able to work in challenging conditions.
    • Comfortable carrying light to medium field equipment for extended periods.
    • Positive attitude, good communication skills, ability to work independently and in teams.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Experience with southeastern small mammals (mice, rats, shrews, moles, voles, chipmunks, squirrels).
    • Experience with small mammal handling and measurements.
    • Experience with deploying and managing Reconyx camera traps and Anabat detectors.

    Salary: $18.00/hour

    Work Hours:

    7:45 a.m.

    - 4:45 p.m., Monday to Friday
